Just For Fun.

We are super duper being encouraged to draw in our spare time, because lots of uni won't even want to look at the stuff you did for foundation/a levels, they just want to see your own personal work.
Um, what spare time?
haaa
but I am getting a bit in.
mainly at college when I get bored of doing whatever the brief was for the day, and start drawing silly things for fun.
One of the boys i sit by just loveees comics and has the poster above our deskk

so i drew it
and now i loveee spiderman too !
Derain- Bridge Over the Riou

Mondaay

I remembered my camera today, so I've got a few pictures of a bit of work.!
These are those still life masking tape and charcoal drawings I did last week:

It's been Really fun just doing things you'd never think of, and really rewarding when they come out looking alriiight !
For homework we had to make a picture using Just parcel tape, which is ew-ey sticky stuff to be honest. You do it against a window and layer tape so that the light can't get through the thick parts which then creates the shape and tone of things!
Everyone moaned about this but I Loved doing it and She liked mine best in class 8)

Todaaay we did a load of drawings in different ways again, most of which are great fun but I'm not about to show you them hah. We did the whole drawing with charcoal stuck to the end of a stick, blindfolded, continuos line, negative spaces, drawing with Text! Everything.
The onlt one I quite liked was when we covered the page in charcoal and used a rubber to make the image:

My back and arms are a little hurty cos we're not allowed to sit down and draw? so everything is stuck on my wall or an easel and it gets hard after 4 hours !
This is my little corner at the end of the day with all of my silly work on it :)

Feeling Blueee.

I've been given my timetable for the next 9 weeks, and it is INTENSE !
It really is jam packed, with different little projects happening with different teachers with different deadlines.
I started this week with my tutor Carol, and she got us to do some really cool drawing exercises, including drawing with masking tape! Mine came out really cool but I haven't had a chance to photograph it and it's still stuck up on my wall. OH! we have also been given our own little desks and a drawer each and stuff, so I've already had fun sticking my 'inspiration' all over the place. My group is pretty cool, Mel is in it, and Laura who are my favourite people there so I got really lucky with that.

On Tuesday we had life drawing with Bob, and I'm still not great at it :/
He's always really intrigued by mine because when people draw people they nearly Always draw the head to big for the body, and the body too big for the legs. But cos I'm trying to avoid that mine always end up with the legs too long and the head too small..

I'm working on it though! As soon as I get one that I vaguely like I'll scan it in.
Then Wednesday we learnt how to use the vacuum former to make moulds that you then fill with plaster, and that will be finished on Wednesday in a fortnight. I actually have research to do on that one :/ Anddd in the afternoon there was a visiting lecturer talking about her work as a fine art animator, which was pretty interesting but not all that.

and Today! We spent the whole day learning little things about photoshop and playing with photos. It was mainly to help people that had never used photoshop before so I didn't learn that much but it was pretty fun anyway.

I'm still not great friends with anyone, and it still can be a little awkward but it's generally getting better.
Yesterday all of the people I usually sit with were busy or at home so I felt like a complete dork and sat on my own. I'm still on a bit of a downer after that now to be honest. I don't feel like I've ever had that much trouble making new friends before so I really don't know how to deal with it when I'm in that situation. I found coming home and crying was the only thing I could come up with.
But today was a bit better, and it'll all be okay.

I went to the cinema with Becky and Clarks last night and it felt really good to be with people that knew me. I miss everyone so much. I've spoken to Bee and Kiff on the phone a few times and a few texts with others, but it's so weird to think that they are all out having a really good time and meeting people when I feel all sad and lonely :/

The film we went to see was really good, "Adventureland"
I thought that it was like a funny film, but it was actually kinda sad and true about life and stuff. It made me think quite a lot. It was filmed in a really interesting way too.

I think I've probably complained enough for today. I have Contextual studies tomorrow which I'm actually not looking forward too at all. Usually I do quite like learning about the history and everything of it, but I'm trying not to let myself get bored too much atm cos that's when I get all sad and that is bound to happen tomorrow.!

Induction Week

i love getting acquainted with the college, the people, the machines and the processes .
And we've had the whole of this week especially to do that.
We've been split into 4 groups, but we're getting moved around next week and it was nice to get all mixed in with people I hadn't spoken to that much yet.
I started with print workshop on Wednesday morning, using my sketches from manorbier as inspiration for mono printing. They're still on the drying rack right now but I might load up some pictures once I've finished them off with maybe a little bit of colour and stitching. I'm also going to bind them all into a book. The teacher for that is called Marguerite, and I'm not very impressed with her so far... She makes things that could be really exciting seem a bit dull.

Then in the afternoon session I was working with Stuart, who's just great, on Photoshop, messing around with photos I had taken on the trip. It was pretty fun, they have all brand new apple macs which made me just about whimper inside, but he was mainly teaching people that have never been on one before so I didn't really learn all that much.

Today, I had life drawing class in the morning.
This was the one everyone was a little apprehensive about I think, but once you start, ti really doesn't matter that you're just studying someone that's completely naked. I'm not great at it, which made me feel a little down for a while but I know it really is just practice that gets you there with that one. Life drawing really is the basics to All drawing. Proportion, shape, shade, tone, line, texture. I learnt quite a bit about proportion that nobody had told me before, and I can't wait til the next session. It was Bob teaching, and he was quite encouraging, although critical at the same time.

"It's better to be approximately right, than definitely wrong."

We also started a little project with Pete today:
100 Possessions.
Think of 100 things that you Need in your life, not including consumables. It's really quite hard.
We have to draw them and bind them into a book as well, and it's just something to do in our own time that he thinks looks good in your interview portfolio.
So far I've only drawn my sketchbook and my phone. I might even upload all of that when it's done !
If I ever lose All of my work at least I'll have some on here right!

MANORBIER.

ART STUDENTS + SHARPIES + SKITTLE VODKA =

AHEM.
On a more serious note, the art work was pretty rad.
We had to do some weird drawing exercises but it really makes you think about every line, and Bob, one of the tutors, one of my favourite tutors! said that he could really see the development in every single sketch.

"EXACTITUDE IS NOT TRUTH" - Matisse
You can take a photograph and it will look Exactly like the scene you pointed the camera at.
But it may not be completely truthful to the feel and the atmosphere of the scene.
Bob explained this in a much better way, but basically, you don't need to get every single shadow and shape into a sketch for it to be 'right'.

Day 5

I was planning on writing this everyday, well, at least while things are new and really interesting, but I really haven't Wanted to until now.
And I would backtrack but I honestly couldn't explain to you what I was thinking or feeling just four days ago.
So it's Friday, and for the first time in ages it's the weekend. Over Summer the days all seem to merge because you get up at the same time on a Saturday as any other day so the excitement of 'weekend' gets completely lost. But no, This is the beginning of The weekend.

I'm really quite drained but pumped at the same time.
Getting up at 7 everyday again is definitely something I could live without, but I already feel as though I have accomplished so much, so I'm getting a bit of a buzz from that.

Our task this week has been to create an installation using only paper.
When we were given the brief, Carol (my tutor) showed us last years examples, and I felt like they were completely out of our depth. We would never be able to come up with those ideas and create them, but now, after watching our installation being constructed I am so just.... CHUFFED! I'm chuffed. We really did create something that I LOVE, and that has given me a massive "BRING IT ONN!" kindof attitude towards the rest of this year.

We had to create the installation in response to a piece of a work by an established artist, and our painting was 'Vision after the Sermon by Paul Ganguin. We had about ten seconds to pick our image as a group, and although everyone picked a different one, I really wanted this and they weren't difficult to persuade.
In the forefront of the painting is of a group of peasants that have just left a sermon. I tried to keep away from the more religious facts part of this, but they have just heard Genesis 32:23-34, Jacob fighting with an angel, and are now imagining it. The tree trunk creates a strong divide in the painting, between reality, on the left side and their imagination on the right. We wanted to create the idea of reality and imagination in our piece as well...................
I'm actually bored of explaining the piece now so
We ended up making a tree.

The people are great. After the first day I did feel really down about it, because everyone just knew people and I felt pretty alone in the awkward meeting people stage, but it has really gotten better and better with every day.

We were put into teams to work on the task and ours got along really well.
I can't really call her 'my best friend on the course' because I really don't know her that well, or know if she even likes me, But the person that interests me the most is Mel. On the first day I was expecting quite a few people to have a really strong sense of style and attitude in the way they dressed, but she was the only one that really stood out, with piercings and really rocky boots and everything. Since then she's toned it down quite a lot because, in her words, people were looking at her a bit like she might have just tortured their cat. And, to be honest, I really wasn't about to go and start a conversation with her on the first day either. But anyway, she was in my team and I really like her.
Everyone else is awesome too. She's just most interesting so far.
There's a Really awesome Irish guy called Miguel who's very funny.
And on the first day there was one of the most beautiful guys I've ever seen but he, sadly, isn't coming back..
We're going on an over night trip to Manorbier on Monday which should be great, getting to know you games and Everything. They're even taking us to the PUB. On a trip.

You're dying to see my tree huh?
Well. It is so so much better in real life, that I'm thinking about not ever showing anyone a picture. Really.
When you're creating an installation, one of the major things you think about is how it fits into the space, how are you going to Use the space, and how do you want the viewer to react to it. And we decided to USE our space. The room was probably about ten by ten foot squared? I think. That might be completely wrong though. And the ceiling was normal height, but we made a tree that Filled the room. You had to duck under branches and step over roots, and because there was stuff hanging from it, the room was even fuller again. We covered the entire ceiling with loose scrumpled up hanging folds of paper, so it looked like a thick canopy.
At one point when we were discussing it we were all sitting around on the floor, and we realised that it was So perfect from that viewpoint, and that That was where anyone coming to see it Had to be.
We blacked out the windows and had one really quite bright lamp, but we used a red gel to make the whole room light up pink.
So, before I show the picture, you need to imagine sitting, in this soft dreamlike kindof room. Mel described the whole thing as Womb-y and that kindof fits it perfectly. It was comforting.

And it was so much better than this :

I really wish I had of spent longer trying to get a photograph that captured the feel of it, but you'll just have to take my word.

TEAM TREE !

I saw people in Tregib uniform today, getting off the school bus at the end of their first day back after Summer.
And I realised I have actually left. I didn't go back today, and I'm never going to be a student there ever again.
